Dove's Luncheonette - Chicago
It's an extension of next-door neighborhood Big Star, the famed taco-and-whiskey honky tonk, but Dove's Luncheonette boasts a unique Tex-Mex concept. Owned by One Off Hospitality (avec, Blackbird, Nico Osteria, Publican, The Violet Hour), it resembles an updated New Mexican diner.
Once you step inside, you'll know immediately that you're certainly not in New Mexico. The soundtrack is all soul and blues, ripped from the 1960s and 1970s playbook with a jukebox filled with classic and rare songs. And the seating arrangement consists of 41 stools, which are available on a first-come, first-serve basis.
The menu is completely different from what you'll find at Big Star. Tex-Mex accents are throughout, from signature chicken fried chicken smothered in chorizo verde gravy to brisket burnt ends accompanied by crispy potatoes, aioli, queso fresco, poblanos, fried eggs and Texas toast. Food is served throughout the day, and beverage consist of locally produced coffee, plus a heady list of mezcal-focused cocktails.
