Breakfast Cemita at Dove’s Luncheonette

There’s a new breakfast sandwich in town, and it looks like a good one. A new morning special at Dove’s Luncheonette, the breakfast cemita is a beast. The handiwork of chef de cuisine Dennis Bernard, the sandwich features scrambled eggs and green chile chicken sausage, topped with Muenster cheese, French-fried onions and smoked pepper aioli. It’s all finished with a bit of smoked sea salt, served on a Mexican-style sesame bun, which is dipped in maple syrup, because why not. The sandwich is features daily in the mornings until 3:00 p.m.

Apres Ski Party at Federales

Chicago may be a far cry from Aspen or Park City, or really any mountains worth skiing on at all, but we can still indulge those classic apres ski traditions. After all, what is apres ski but an excuse to drink cozy cocktails in a cozy setting? Now that’s something Chicagoans excel at. Federales is hosting its own apres ski party on January 27, from 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m., and they’re embracing the season and the cold by opening up the roof for the occasion. Don’t worry, though, they’ll have ice shots, shot skis, and an ice luge to really celebrate in appropriate style, and of course, comfy outdoorsy attire is suggested. Admission is $10 per person, which includes one free hot drink ticket.

Girl & the Chicken Sandwich

Honey Butter Fried Chicken has lined up one of the most popular chefs in town for the first iteration of its “Clucker Collaboration” series of 2018, wherein the Avondale eatery showcases a guest chef sandwich for a few days. Next up is Stephanie Izard of Girl & the Goat fame, who is serving her aptly dubbed Girl & the Chicken sandwich now through January 28. Izard worked with Honey Butter’s Christine Cikowski and Josh Kulp to develop and refine the sandwich, which consists of fried chicken strips topped with chicken fat yogurt and Izard’s gochujang-based “This Little Goat Went to Korea” sauce. It’s also got some pickled red onions and fresno chilies for added crunch and color. For every sandwich sold, Honey Butter is donating $1 to Pilot Light, a local non-profit that helps educate Chicago youth about nutrition and healthy eating.

Donut Fest

In other fried food news, Chicago’s beloved — and wildly popular — Donut Fest is back for another year. Taking place January 28 at Chop Shop’s 1st Ward in Bucktown, the fried festival features a dizzying lineup of local donut shops vying for glory. Contenders and vendors this year include Longman & Eagle, Doughnut Vault, Firecakes, Roeser’s Bakery, Stan’s Donuts and much more. Coffee will be provided by Ipsento, Dark Matter and Big Shoulders. The event runs from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. (early admission VIP tickets get access at 8:00 a.m.), and general admission is $35, which includes entry, a tasting of each donut, three coffee tickets and a gift bag.
