Beacon Tavern - Chicago
This sister restaurant to Acanto, The Dawson and The Gage is only steps away from Chicago's Magnificent Mile. The venue of Beacon Tavern was previously the home for a long-time McDonald's restaurant and they play up the connection with an homage to the McMuffin during brunch service: a gourmet version of the sausage, egg and cheese muffin.
But other than that, there are no traces of the fast-food chain. They've completely gutted the space, making it an upscale, yet affordable destination for contemporary American fare. The open kitchen allows guests to observe the action by the chefs and cooks, and the many booths spread throughout the dining room accommodate those seeking a bit of privacy.
Seafood is a major focus at Beacon Tavern. There's a raw bar focusing on daily oysters, tuna tartare, prawns and seasonal crabs. For entrees, there's the catch of the day, bouillabaisse and Maine lobster served with pasta. And those looking for meat options should appreciate the fried chicken, signature burger and filet mignon punctuated by roasted Cipollini onion, cauliflower gratin and beef jus.
