Scofflaw - Chicago

This Logan Square-based, gin-focused cocktail bar offers American craft beers on tap as well as a small-plates menu. Scofflaw is a collaboration between a number of restaurant and bar vets, including former The Whistler bartender Danny Shapiro.

While Scofflaw always appears to be boisterous with lively young professionals who either live in Logan Square or frequent the neighborhood, it's also a popular date-night destination. During winter, couples should arrive early to scoop sofa seats in front of the fireplace. And in summer, the outdoor patio is a great place to be to settle in for large-format cocktails.

First late dinner experience: Ordered the Buttered Chicken. Chicken was good. Rice was okay. Spiced tomato sauce was decent, it was too much if in my opinion and could've gone without it. Had a bite of their Scofflaw burger and immediately had regrets for not getting the burger instead.

Every cocktail is exceptional. They aren't all as off the wall or complex as you might find in places like Billy Sunday or Estereo, but much like the latter the focus on a single standout spirit (in this case gin) really helps enhance and focus the cocktail menu. The food offerings have come a long way very recently and the sweet and spicy beef is a standout on the new dinner menu. The butter chicken was fine as well, but I'd skip it next time. The ambience here is chill and dark and has the vibe of a pre-prohibition speakeasy while staying thoroughly modern in its menus. Overall always a splendid experience.
