The Berghoff

The Berghoff - Chicago

Once one of Chicago's oldest restaurants, opened in 1898, possessing post-Prohibition liquor license no. 1, the Berghoff was famous for its historic charm, its German specialties, its creamed spinach, its stand-up sandwich bar and its rude, unionized waiters. It officially closed in 2006 and was replaced by what is now Berghoff Catering & Restaurant Group, run by Carlyn Berghoff, a daughter of the last owners, who was otherwise previously unconnected with the restaurant.
