Home Run Inn - Chicago
The original location of this classic Chicago chain was established in 1947 by Nick Perrino and his mother-in-law, Mary Grittani. They developed the recipe for this thin-crust pizza that's the centerpiece of a nine-unit restaurant chain and frozen-foods empire.
In addition to the 31st Street location, there are outposts on Archer Avenue as well as in Beverly, Lakeview, Bolingbrook, Darien and Melrose Park. Home Run Inn is indeed a local and visitor favorite, and each store boasts its own personality.
It's especially an attraction for larger groups, who typically start off with something from the appetizer menu. It's highly recommended to go for the "all star platter," which consists of three of some of the most popular items (i.e. mozzarella sticks, chicken tenders, jumbo wings, boneless wings). There is also a selection of salads, plus cheesy bacon garlic bread, loaded fries and soup.
Diners may choose from several options for pizza. They may customize their pies from an extensive list of ingredients that includes turkey sausage, a gluten-free crust, giardiniera, smoked bacon and roasted red peppers. They may also order an eight-inch personal pizza. They may also choose from "hall of fame" (The 1947, Chicago's Best, Nick's Super), "curve ball" (Carolina BBQ chicken, bacon cheeseburger, turkey florentine) or "flame thrower" (garlic fireball, sweet caliente, buffalo chicken).
For those who still want other options, there are burgers, chicken sandwiches and pasta from which to choose.
