Good Measure

Good Measure - Chicago

So much more than just a bar, Good Measure serves not only wonderful cocktails but a highly inventive – and delicious – selection of food. Formerly of uber-hip Three Aces, Chef Matt Troost brings a punk-rock sensibility and a seasoned chef’s hand to some of the most intriguing “bar food” you’ll find in Chicago.

You’ll probably start with drinks, and there’s a capably curated selection of cocktails, wine and beer. The cocktails are where the bar shows its real skill, of course, with such drinks as the Oaxacan Old Fashioned with mezcal, tequila and agave syrup and a Daquiri with three-year-old rum and, standing in for lemon, the hyper-regional paw paw.

Troost prepares a truly memorable menu of snacks and full meals that encourage you to hang, chill and enjoy. Nashville Hot Fried Duck Livers (when’s the last time you saw duck livers on a bar menu, or even a dinner menu?) are dressed with dill pickle Romanesco sauce, micro-celery and cucumber ranch dressing. Gluten-free and vegan, the Sunflower Hummus is curry-marinated zucchini, mint and sesame, with a mound of crisp shallots on top, fantastic. For heartier appetites, there’s a Truffled Polish Sausage and Rarebit Cheese Dip. One big standout is the Loaded Baked Potato Brandade, cod and potatoes whipped with bacon confit, melted leeks and sharp cheddar, topped with avocado crema, crunchy potato skin and scallions, a knock-out.
