I went in here the other night. On the door was a handwritten sign that said "Please support local liquor stores", and I was hoping to finally have found an honest store in Chicago. I noticed a few bottles of bourbon behind the counter that I always keep an eye out for. When I was checking out I inquired about one of the bottles, Orphan Barrel Barterhouse, and was told that "it's not for sale". I asked if maybe they were raffling it or auctioning it and the man doubled down that it wasn't for sale. As I was leaving he commented that "some day, someone's going to walk in here with $3-4 grand cash and I'll sell it then." This kind of insane price gouging is ruining bourbon for the average consumer who can't find a halfway decent bottle for 3-4x MSRP, let alone whatever you can call that. I'm all for supporting small stores over big national chains. This kind of business practice gives small business ownership a bad name and is insulting to the community. How can you ask for support (and for people to pay higher prices over a Binny's or some equivalent) and then turn around and charge those kinds of prices compared to what the distillery suggests? It's disgusting.

The owner is a kind, patient man with many helpful suggestions. The store is laid out nicely and has a wide variety of beer, wine, and spirits to choose from. I always look forward to shopping here when I want a little treat.
