JAMES BEARD SEMIFINALIST NOMINEES REPRESENT CHICAGO'S BEST RESTAURANTS

On January 27, 2023, the next generation of James Beard award semifinalist nominees was announced. Here are ten James Beard semifinalists – all in Chicago – nominated in several categories.

 Wazwan


Wazwan chef Zubair Mohajir has been nominated for Best Chef in the Great Lakes region for his Indian and Southeast Asian-inspired cuisine.


Smyth, sister restaurant to The Loyalist, has received a nomination for Outstanding Restaurant.


Obelix has been recognized as one of the country’s Best New Restaurants.


Big Jones Chef Paul Fehribach has been nominated for Best Chef in the Great Lakes region.


Sepia, helmed by internationalist chef Andrew Zimmerman, has been nominated for Outstanding Hospitality.



 Kasama


Kasama, the Filipino restaurant in Ukrainian Village, has both chefs Genie Kwan and Tim Flores nominated for Best Chef in the Great Lakes region.


Khmai Cambodian Fine Dining, one of the few places in the Midwest to serve the cuisine of Cambodia, has been nominated as a Best New Restaurant.

  

Mi Tocaya Antojeria chef Diana Davila Bolden – who serves traditional Mexican food with her own unique twist – has been nominated as the Best Chef in the Great Lakes region.

  

Virtue Restaurant and Bar, serving down-home southern food, unfussy and delicious, is proud to announce that Damarr Brown has been nominated for best Emerging Chef.

 

Virtue Restaurant and Bar’s owner and Chef Erick Williams took home last year’s award for Best Chef in the Great Lakes region – we’ll soon see if Damarr Brown can make this the second year in-a-row that this restaurant takes home a Beard.
