Baylor Watermelons

Now in the third generation, the Baylor family has been hauling truckloads of fresh watermelons north from Southern farmers every summer since 1953. Seedless and sweeter seeded melons, red- and and sometimes yellow-fleshed, and they'll usually cut you a sample if you like. They usually have fresh roasted peanuts, too. Besides this seasonal stand, they sell from their trucks, typically parked on 95th Street near Martin Luther King Drive, at Skokie Highway and Half Day Road in Highland Park and a few other places mostly around the South Side, from May to September. The season usually begins with Florida melons and moves north through Georgia to the highly sought-after Mississippi melons as the harvest progresses. There are also Baylor stands and trucks each summer in Gary, Racine and Milwaukee.
