SOPHIA STEAK - WILMETTE  While steaks are the menu's major focus, you'll also find a host of hearty and comforting entrees ideal for a night out--or in--for a family. Choose from the likes of miso-glazed salmon paired with ginger-jasmine rice, roasted half chicken with crispy potato hash or the ginger-jasmine rice topped with asparagus and broccoli.

Steaks were the specialty at Glenn Keefer's namesake restaurant, so expect the same at Sophia. Here, ready-to-grill steaks are sourced from some of the best ranches and cattle producers in the country. They're pre-carved, seasoned and vacuumed packed. Four varieties include an eight-ounce Aurora Black Angus filet, plus Demkota Ranch's 10-ounce flat iron and 14-ounce prime New York strip. Each may be enhanced by Sophia's signature

EJ’s Place. Named one of Chicago’s best restaurants by Chicago Magazine in 1997, EJ’s Place in Skokie has continued to earn that distinction with prime aged steaks and superb seafood. On the menu are Chicago original classic foods like shrimp DeJonghe and chicken Vesuvio. The stars of the show, of course, are the red meat options, but there’s also a beautiful selection of veal, including veal piccata, marsala, limone and bone-in Parmigiana. This is a family place with a very comfortable vibe…and excellent food.

The Barn Steakhouse.  The Barn Steakhouse in Evanston has been earning accolades since the day it opened, having received Zagat’s “Chicago’s Best New Restaurant” designation as well as Make It Better magazine’s “The Best Dishes We Ate in 2016.” The Chicago Tribune says Amy Morton’s “The Barn Steakhouse Does ‘Throwback’ right,” and indeed, there is a traditional feel about the dining room at The Barn Steakhouse that is both sophisticated and comfy. On the menu are many of your favorite cuts of meat, as well as surprises like Crab Spaghetti (with white wine, chilies and Parmesan) and Bison Bolognese (with red wine, ricotta and warm spices).

Eddie Merlot’s. In Lincolnshire, the outpost of nationally known Eddie Merlot’s won the 2020 Diner’s Choice award for Best Steak, Special Occasion, and Romantic restaurant – a trifecta with something to appeal to most diners. The menu showcases USDA prime beef – filet, rib eye, New York strip and others – and if you want the Best Steak for a Special Occasion/Romantic dinner, consider the Chateaubriand for two, carved tableside. There’s also some fantastic fish, cedar plank-roasted salmon, shrimp and grits and pan-seared sea scallops. To pair with any dish, have the sommelier select just the right bottle for you from Eddie Merlot’s extensive wine cellar.

Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse and Winebar. Another Lincolnshire restaurant that represents a national network of steakhouses, Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse and Winebar leverages volume buying power to get you the very best meat. And what is that “very best meat”?  Well, check this out: Prime New York strip, prime ribeye and prime tomahawk are just some of the fantastic red meat listed on the menu. If your tastes tend toward the aquatic, there’s miso-glazed Chilean seabass and seasonal lobster tail. Whether you go for surf or turf for dinner, for dessert, we suggest Chocolate Gooey Butter Cake (honeycomb brittle, chocolate sauce and caramel).

Roka Akor. The Roka Akor steakhouse in Old Orchard shopping center offers a beautiful range of prepared Japanese foods (like crispy fried squid, wagyu dumplings and prime beef tonkatsu) as well as sushi, sashimi and rolls. In addition to these delicate and delicious items, there are options for bigger appetites, including the Snake River Farms Wagyu filet, yuzu-miso marinated black cod and lamb cutlets with Korean spices. As a side, we could not recommend more highly the Japanese Wild Mushroom, Mountain Vegetable Rice Hot Pot.
