Weekly Planner: Mezcal Class, National Pizza Week, Bottomless Ramen and More

Mezcal Class at Todos Santos

Riding the wave of mezcal’s popularity in the U.S., bars like Todos Santos have emerged with a focus on the agave spirit, along with other offbeat liquors that veer away from typical tequila drinks. On January 17, Jay Schroeder will guide a mezcal class for 20 lucky attendees at the subterranean bar, covering everything from technique and origin to terroir and geography. It’s part of a new monthly education series, held from 6:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., including four pours of different mezcals. Reserve your spot here

National Pizza Week at Macello

What New Year’s resolution? Forget all about those healthy commitments and dive face-first into National Pizza Week, which runs until January 13. You can celebrate accordingly at Macello in the West Loop, which has a special pie on the docket for the occasion. It’s called the “pizza amore” pie, made with Barese sausage, pancetta, prosciutto and mortadella. Other menu staples offer plenty to choose from, too, like margherita pizzas, the namesake Macello pizza with Burrata, olives and Barese sausage and the pizza Americana with fresh mozzarella, sopressata, mushrooms and roasted red peppers.

Bottomless Ramen at Tokio Pub

Winter (especially the frigid weeks of January) is ramen season. There’s no better way to brace against the cold than with a piping-hot bowl of spicy broth laden with pork, egg and noodles. Tokio Pub has your needs covered this month, offering bottomless bowls every Sunday through the end of January. Guests can choose between pulled chicken, steak, pulled pork or pork belly for their ramen. There’s a limit of four refills per person, but it’d be pretty impossible to eat more than that anyway. 

Paella Cooking Lesson at Cafe Ba-Ba-Reeba!

If you’re new year goal was to learn to cook more, than Cafe Ba-Ba-Reeba! has just the lesson for you. The classic Spanish restaurant is teaching guests how to prepare its famed paella, with a class on January 16, from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., by chef Eric Jorgensen. Not only will attendees learn the ins and outs of paella, but they’ll be treated to a five-course dinner including pintxos, tapas and dessert, all paired with wines. The cost is $42 per person and tickets can be reserved by calling the restaurant or visiting its website.
