Lyra - Chicago

Lyra is a Greek restaurant, newly opened in the hip and happening Fulton Market neighborhood, offering traditional Greek food with contemporary flair. Chefs Athinagoras Kostakos and Alexis Zopas are in the kitchen, which features Lyra's custom wood and charcoal burning hearth, put into service to prepare Lyra's delicious, unpretentious plates.

USA Today speculates that "Swarms of diners filling Lyra must have read that the Mediterranean Diet is ranked #1 in 2022. Or they just want to have a good time, eating fresh takes on Greek cuisine in a beautiful honey-lit space."

The popularity of the Mediterranean diet does, indeed, continue, and at Lyra the food leverages the fresh, veg-forward recipes of the Greek Islands, and it does so with delicious creativity.

Hummus is on the menu at most Greek restaurants, but at Lyra, they take it a step further by adding charred beets, pomegranate, and toasted pine nuts, which adds a lot of dimension to what can be a one-dimensional dish.

Charred octopus, another Greek restaurant favorite, is here upgraded with some super-tasty accoutrements, including charred cipollini onion, Fresno chili, Kalamata olive relish, and Greek balsamic.

If your tastes tend more toward big, beautiful platters of meat, there's the Slow-Roasted Lamb Shoulder Gyros, as well as the Mykonian Anice Crusted Pork Chops, with Himalayan sea salt, gremolata, Florina pepper and romesco.

The steak lover in the group is going to go for the twenty-two ounce dry-aged prime ribeye with Linz heritage Angus, garlic confit and herb butter, prepared over the blazing hearth in the kitchen, a much better steak than you may have come to expect at a Greek restaurant.

The wine selection is truly wonderful, with rare vintages of both whites and reds. In the whites, watch out for the 2020 Domaine Sigalas, Assyrtiko from Santorini; in the reds, you're going to want to sample the 2017 Diamantis Magoutes, Xinomavro from Macedonia.

Lyra is a new kind of Greek restaurant, and we think you're going to love it.
