HopCat Chicago - Chicago

The Grand Rapids-based, craft beer-focused establishment has opened a Chicago outpost, in Lakeview. Once rated the number three beer bar in the world by Beer Advocate magazine, HopCat showcases one of the best beer selections in the world.

At the Chicago location, beer enthusiasts will find 130 beers on tap, 200-plus bottles from around the world and 30 Illinois-made craft beers. The from-scratch, gastropub-style food is meant to match sud selections, of course.

Most items are meant to share at HopCat. Pretzel Nuggz, for example, are flash-fried, salted and served with warm cheese sauce and spicy horsey mustard for dipping. Meat Head pizza rolls are filled with pepperoni, cherry smoked bacon, chorizo and mozzarella. And the signature Crack Fries--beer battered fries sprinkled with HopCat's signature cracked black pepper seasoning--may be topped with chili, poutine or sloppy Joseph mix.

HopCat's brunch menu includes a build-your-own Bloody Mary bar.

We stopped by for dinner on New Year's Eve and the food was fantastic. I really enjoyed the BBQ pulled pork and their crack fries are just that (addicting). I don't normally finish my entire meal but they gave me the perfect amount of food.

The crack fries are definitely as addicting as crack is supposedly!! The rest is the food menu (burgers, pizza) is good as well, but it's the fries that make me keep going back! Service is always good. I've never had a complaint about that. The hostesses seem a bit ... Inexperienced though, but it's tolerable. The ambiance is nice and pretty unique, though it's a little too red in color for my preference and everything seems to be tinted red. They also have a great beer selection and you can order flights! Bottom line... Great fries + lots of beer = great evening.

Loved the vibe, the open space and the music. The service was good but the kicker is definitely the impressive array of beer. Thumbs up on the loaded fries too. We just stopped by for a quick drink post dinner and as luck had it, I happened to drop by to kill an hour on another day. I tried the soup (Cheese and Ale) and it was beyond delicious! Must try

Pretty good food here! I usually get the fries and the onion soup (weird combo, I know, but I likes what I likes). I don't love the noise level but that's just me - I like music to be at a volume where I don't have to shout to be heard by my table companions.

We came here for brunch with lots of people for the morning after a wedding. The fries are delicious. That was about it. I think they specialize in alcohol, not food and probably for obvious reasons. They just didn't seem accustomed to serving breakfast. The server was nice and all but we were missing things like cream and sugar for coffee, silverware... You know, basic stuff that is kind of par for the course for eating. Our little table of 5 was the first party there and we ordered right away but at least two other tables got their food before we did. I had the "dude's waffle" which sounded great on the menu but it was kind of a disappointment. The specialty bourbon syrup sounded good too but it was served pretty cold which takes away from the taste. Oh well. If I was interested in drinking my experience may have been different. That said, if you are going to offer and serve brunch, it should run like a brunch.

Overall good experience here! Great place to come with friends or family when you're looking to hang out a bit and are not in a rush. Our waitress was super friendly and awesome, but the service was a bit slow. I ordered one of the CYO pizzas and the crack fries. Both were very good! Would definitely come again just for the fries and the cheese sauce. They also have a huge beer selection, which was cool.

Great bar with tons of space and enough TVs to watch a game anywhere u sit. Lots of great beers on tap and the Crack fries are really good (but I think they're too expensive for just fries). The atmosphere is really nice during the summer when the windows open. Overall a good place to gather with friends.

The food was really good! The crack fries are a necessity! They have a huge beer menu with something for everybody. We did order one mixed drink from the bar that was much stronger than expected! The only thing I disliked was the lighting (as you can see from the photos)...not exactly easy on the eyes. But regardless! I'll return for those crack fries!

So many beers! And great pub food to go with it. And cool decor! You walk in to a German beer hall. If you keep walking, the bar wraps around and has awesome comfortable red chairs. Plenty of space. Windows that open wide. The carpet is from Kubrick's 'The Shining,' which is way cool. A beer lover's dream.
