Mark and Margarita Challenger, owners of the erstwhile Wholey Guacamole Mexican Grill, took a step up in June 2010 with this larger, more upscale Glencoe eatery featuring contemporary take on authentic family recipes. The restaurant is named for Guanajuato (pronounced "juan-a-wotto"), the state in the central highlands of Mexico where Chef Margarita Challenger grew up. Her menu offers dishes such as blackened tilapia fajitas, tacos filled with barbacoa (slowly cooked, pulled goat meat) and grilled pork chops lightly covered with mole poblano.

Excellent, definitely will go back. It was very cold that day but they have, in addition to indoor dining, outdoor heated glass cubicles, which can seat up to 6 to 8 people, so covid protection is excellent.

Not what it used to be. Updated menu and the food has reversed course. It’s as if a food consultant arrived to tell them how the restaurant can achieve better profits for cutting corners. Three staples: Guacamole. Super small volcanic bowl.Really small for $$. Tortilla soup? Never had it puréed before. Typically it’s more brothy. Queso Fundino isn’t a cheese casserole. It’s huge and too much for the 4 tortillas. Before they moved from their old location, loved their food. Now…it’s not worth it and that is sad.

Guanajuato was outstanding! Great service complemented with delicious Mexican fare. Really good margaritas and guacamole were a great start. The highlight though is the enchiladas, amazing. The combo platter is a great option to try different foods, as all were excellent. Do not skip dessert as the tres leches strawberry cake and churros with ice cream are fantastic finishes.

beautiful restaurant, and amazing food and drinks. everything was brought out promptly. chips and salsa were regularly offered and filled. you can get spicier salsas upon request, which are great! you get a lot of bang for your buck with food and drinks here!

We've been wanting to try this place for awhile now. Very disappointing. Although waiter was very nice, service was very slow and food was mediocre at best. Kind of pricey too for what you get. One little scoop of guac was $11 etc...I couldn't even eat what I ordered it was so bad. Thankfully they didn't charge me. Won't be running back here anytime soon.

Delicious. We ordered carry out for dinner when we had company in town (7 people) and everything was excellent! Only comment would be that it would be nice if the guac portion was a little larger for the price. The flavor was very good though. With how good everything was carried out, we look forward to trying in person!!

Wooooow the food here is fantastic. Every plate is a work of delicious edible art. The staff is super friendly. The environment is modern with outdoor dining and light music, in a small town setting. I really wish this restaurant was in my town. If I ever can I will eat here again.

The hosts are very hard working and polite. Never ate here but I do Uber pick ups from time to time. Their food smells great and I’ll probably try this place out at some point. Just wanted to leave you guys a review since your staff is excellent. The hostesses are who I deal with most and they are 👍.

We hadn't been to the new location since we moved out of the North Shore. We sat outside on a very pleasant evening. Service was prompt and good. We had great guacamole for a starter. I had the steak and vegetables, my partner had the Mahi Mahi tacos. Both we excellent and quite filling. The veggies were done perfectly and very tasty. Very happy to experience the new look and location. We'll route ourselves back again before too long.

It has an amazing chef, friendly environment, love the the Crab and Margarita's Enchiladas. The tamales appetizer is great! Martin makes the best fresh Margaritas!!!
