Cafe Cancale - Chicago

One Off Hospitality (Avec, Blackbird, Big Star, Publican, Violet Hour, etc.) opens its first French-focused restaurant in the space formerly occupied by Publican Anker. More specifically, Cafe Cancale specializes in seafood, offering more than 35 different oyster varieties, plus entrees like trout almondine with brown butter, truffle peach olives and radish as well as whole grilled lobster with yuzo kosho butter.

Located at the nexus of Bucktown/Wicker Park--at the Six Corners--Cafe Cancale was inspired by One Off Hospitality partner/executive chef Paul Kahan's visit to Brittany, France, a famed oyster town. The grande seafood tower showcases these oysters as well as mussels, clams, shrimp and beef tartare. Non-seafood favorites include roast chicken, steak frites an duck terrine.

There are a host of French wines on the menu, with many by the glass, plus French-inspired cocktails.

Cafe Cancale has some of the best contemporary French food in Chicago. Their $1 oyster happy hours from 4-6 is my favorite in the city. The oysters are always fresh. Also, the service is great. Cannot go wrong here.

Excellent staff from the bartender to GM Andrew. We were under a time constraint and every dish came out at an excellent pace so we finished on time but never felt rushed. The smoked trout rillettes is a revelation. Highly recommended!

This review is simply based on our happy hour. $10 bottles of house wine and $1 oysters. The house wine was a great deal, we had the rose. We also ordered frites and tons of oysters. All were fresh and great. This may be the best new happy hour in Wicker Park, Mon - Fri. I advise you still make a reservation before going.

Fresh seafood, best oysters I’ve ever had! I suggest getting the chefs special. Delicious food, relaxed atmosphere - great place to dine. Looking forward to returning to try more of the menu!

Perfectly cooked octopus! Just WOW! The seafood was all paired perfectly. The champagne list could use some additions (in my own opinion). The mouse at the end with blueberries... great way to end the meal!

The food was awesome and the service on point. Lived the vibe. I only took off a star because we ordered the baguette as a starter and the outer crust was so hard it cut up my mouth and most of the dishes are a little high on the acidity scale, and it was painful to eat. I thought it was just me but then my date also mentioned at the end that the bread had cut up his mouth.

The cutest French restaurant around, the food on the other hand is great. Good service, nice location and a very chill yet sophisticated atmosphere. The steak frites and éclair were the highlights of the meal.

Loved it!! Everything from the atmosphere to the food. Very friendly staff and good prices. Highly recommend. The savory clams were so delicious we ordered them twice. Just an amazing experience.

It's a keeper. One Off Hospitality proves once again they are at the top of the food chain in Chicago. Not only were the main owners present, but they were working as though is was the first restaurant they ever opened. We walked in without a reservation and were greeted as regulars (we plan to be) and handed 2 glasses of sparkling wine- just because. Customer service and making you feel welcome: 10, atmosphere 10, food (what we tried) 10. I don't write many reviews but Cafe Cancale, welcome to the neighborhood.

Excellent food and friendly staff! Opening night was very busy but we didn't have to wait too long either to be seated or for our food. Food was well priced ($100 for 2 people without wine).
