Dining at 801 was something I was really looking forward to. One of the things Kansas City is known for is it’s steak so having a dry aged Kansas City strip steak was on my list of must have. Unfortunately I didn’t know that 801 cooks their steaks Pittsburgh style. I never even heard of Pittsburgh style until I received my medium steak burned to a crisp. I mean we’re talking so burned that even after having the mediocre key lime pie I still tasted the burned meat. In fact that all I tasted the rest of the evening. I like a little char but not this. I didn’t know Pittsburgh style was a thing. Upon looking it up it turns out that workers in Pittsburgh only had 30 minutes for lunch so they had to cook the steaks which are high in protein super hot thus causing the burned outside while still being juicy inside. I checked 801’s website and the menu on line and there’s no mention of Pittsburgh style. Why would a steak house purposely use a method of cooking a steak that was designed for speed. Makes no sense to me. Needless to say I now have to ask if the steak I’m getting is going to be cooked in this style and I’m never going back to 801. Having to pay this much for a beautifully aged steak and have it burned to a crisp is a crime. I didn’t say anything to our exceptional server (who was the best part of my experience) because I didn’t want cold sides and I wanted to eat with my guest who also was disappointed by the over chard steak. The rest of the meal was so so.

Kansas City is known for the BBQ but the 801 Chophouse was a wonderful hidden gem. After several days of business travel, and trying many wonderful places to eat along the way, the 801 Chophouse was by far my favorite restaurant to visit. Our server Zach F offered a great dining experience with top notch service. The ribeye I ordered was excellent and cooked perfectly. We also tried the asparagus with olive oil and the scalloped potatoes! Between the scalloped potatoes and the steak it was SUPER tough to determine which I enjoyed more. Try them both! The prices were comparable to other Chophouse style restaurants I had been to. If you are in the area and want to treat yourself, this was so worth the money spent.

I'm giving this place 5 stars based on the impeccable quality of the rib-eye I ordered, plus the service. The steak was cooked exactly right, was nicely seasoned. The cocktails were crafted proficiently. That said, I *want* to subtract a star for something. Maybe it is because of the price, because for the price, you should *expect* a perfectly cooked and seasoned cut of steak. But I cannot remove a star for perfection, at any price! Maybe I can because of the ambiance, which is a very traditional, very dark, very wood-laden steakhouse. It's the kind of ambiance where those with older eyes, like me, will be using the flashlight on their phones to read the menu. Still, if you are looking for that kind of cozy, romantic, date-night ambiance, this would be a plus for you. So, I'm leaving 5-stars, even if personally I would prefer something a bit brighter and more welcoming inside.

Get the 801 Cut Bone-In prime rib!! You won't regret it. Best prime rib we've had (and we've had/made a lot!). Worth the price.

I was very excited to try 801 Chophouse, but not entirely impressed. I had the Prime Rib which was enormous. I just couldn't taste any flavor. Our server was not 100 percent attentive. I would hesitate considering the price before returning. Other great steakhouses in KC.

Ordered the wagyu beef medium, came out rare, brought it back medium well; didn't say anything else after the second attempt. No consideration of recompense. Lobster bisque was good, oysters and scallops were delicious, Top Hats were good, Missouri Side Car was good, bartender a little rude. Server was very nice and professional.
