Weekend Planner: Halloweekend Edition
Who says Halloween treats have to be all fun-sized candy? Wine is the real treat, especially since pinky-sized portions of candy lose their charm after the trick-or-treat age. To celebrate Halloween the adult way, head to Ampersand Wine Bar for "Hallowine," a festive evening that serves as a throwback to the Mad Men-esque era of American revelry. Taking place Halloween night from 8:00 p.m. until 11:00 p.m., Hallowine features plenty of wine (obviously), bar snacks galore, cocktails, and a costume contest. The cost is $45 per person and tickets can be purchased on Ampersand's website.
Vermilion Lounge Night
Speaking of parties, Vermilion launches its "Vermilion Lounge Nights" series with a shindig on Friday, October 30. Beginning at 9:00 p.m., the event is designed to offer an alternative party option for downtown denizens looking to escape the younger, more frenzied sets. Expect cocktails, desserts, dancing, eclectic street food-inspired bites, and music courtesy of DJ Seen Clear.
Dia de los Muertos at Cantina 1910
Halloween isn't the only holiday going down this weekend. Dia de los Muertos gets its due diligence at Cantina 1910, which is celebrating the Mexican holiday all weekend long with a handful of dining and drinking specials. Courtesy of chef Diana Davila, food specials on hand through November 1 include tacos al pastor, utilizing a very special recipe and procedure inspired by Davila's grandmother. There's also a special riff on nachos, a far-from-average preparation served with masa chips and moronga chili made with Mexican blood sausage. For dessert, pastry chef Andrew Pingul is serving up his take on a Snickers bar, which was his grandfather's favorite candy bar. Dubbed "Churro of the Dead," the special dessert contains peanut butter mousse, salted caramel, and dark chocolate. And lastly, mixologist Michael Fawthrop is whipping up a special Mexican hot chocolate drink. The masa-infused beverage is spirited with Milagro Reposado Tequila, Milletti Amaro, and Ancho Reyes chili liqueur. It's all topped with tortilla whipped cream.
