Weekend Planner: Country Sundays, Summer Truffles, and Caffe Oliva

Weekend Planner: Country Sunday

It's fun to go a little bit country sometimes. Especially when country involves fried chicken and biscuits. State and Lake Chicago Tavern's new Country Sunday promo is a weekly smattering of down-home comfort food attuned to country music. It's an apt way to end your weekend on a decadent note.

Summer Preview Party at Katherine Anne Confections

Get a treacly taste of sweets to come from Katherine Anne Confections at their summer preview party on Friday, May 30. Infusing a splash of summer sunshine into her new lines of wares, proprietor Katherine Duncan will be showcasing fresh new truffles, caramels, and marshmallows. The theme for caramels will be beer, imbued with flavors like porter and coffee, while truffles include pomegranate-blueberry-basil, strawberry-balsamic, and banana-sesame. Then there's the mango and toasted coconut marshmallow, which sounds like a beach vacation in the mouth. The open house-style event runs from 5:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. and costs $25 per person.

Dine Beachside at Caffe Oliva

Chicago's preeminent beachside dining destination, Caffe Oliva, is open for the season. And it's your new weekend obsession. Entering its third year, Caffe Oliva is nestled alongside Olive Park, hence the adorable name. A new motif this year entails lounge-y cabanas and couches sure to make you feel better about life. New chef Michael Wurm is behind the food, bolstering the menu with new items such as chicken drummettes, flatbreads, blackened fish tacos, and lamb burgers. There's also boozy adult popsicles, which sound absolutely perfect. Expect more cocktails and craft beers on the drink list. BYO sunscreen.
