Sweet of the Week: Chocolate Chunk Cookie at Beatrix

If there's one thing I love more than a perfect chocolate chip cookie, it's Beatrix. I don't think it's an exaggeration to call Beatrix my favorite restaurant of 2013. Morning, noon, or night, it's my catch-all restaurant for anything and everything. It fits the bill for a business lunch, a cup of coffee and a pastry in the morning, a nice dinner, a round of drinks, and anything in between. I seriously can't get enough of this place. But being the savage sweet tooth that I am, my favorite component may very well be the impressive pastry case in the rear of the restaurant. It's a veritable bakery, stocked with a variety of unique pastries and desserts, from angel food muffins to butterscotch sticky buns. This is all well and good, but sometimes you just can't beat a classic. Beatrix does a masterful job perfecting the chocolate chip cookie template, and I can't remember being this smitten with a cookie since I was a kiddo dunking Oreos in milk for the first time.

The chocolate chunk cookie at Beatrix is simply the stuff of cookie dreams. Roughly the size of my cheek, this hefty snack sports the ideal texture with a slightly crackly exterior and a soft, gooey interior. It's soft and doughy, flecked with large, melty morsels of chocolate, which ooze and permeate the interior of the cookie. Notes of brown sugar are prominent, but at the same time this thing isn't too cloying. It's all too easy to tear off chunks and steadily consume the entire thing in a matter of minutes. Which is just fine, especially if you precede it with a salad like I did last week. Did I mention how much I love Beatrix?
