Super Dining for the Super Bowl
The biggest TV day of the year is as much about food as it is about football. And commercials. Your snacking an drinking itinerary during the Super Bowl is of the utmost importance. This year, Chicago restaurants and bars are kicking off Super Bowl specials and packages to celebrate the big game and keep you feeling like a champ. Here's your guide for where to fuel up, what to order, and what to eat:
Chicken both fried and Buffalo-style is one of the pivotal foods for Super Bowl noshing. Even better when it comes from a locally minded fried chicken restaurant. Honey Butter Fried Chicken's Super Bowl package is ample enough to satisfy 10 hungry spectators with items such as fried chicken with honey butter and corn muffins, fried chicken hero sandwiches, honey buffalo wings, fusilli pasta salad, roasted sweet potato salad, and chocolate toffee cookies. All this glory can be yours for $200, and orders can be picked up from the restaurant on February 1 between 11:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. and can be placed by calling 773-231-5060. For an additional $40, tack on Honey Butter nachos heaped with pimento cheese sauce, sweet corn pico de gallo, and candied jalapeños. The deadline to place an order is January 30.
Speaking of nachos, Headquarters Beercade is celebrating the glorious Game Day snack with a nacho-focused special on February 1. Head to the River North bar for an all-you-can-eat tortilla spree with your choice of meat (slow-roasted pork shoulder, skirt steak, chili-lime shrimp, braised chicken) and toppings like sautéed peppers, caramelized onions, olives, queso fresco, nacho cheese sauce, pickled japalenos, guacamole, and chipotle crema. Japanese cuisine may not seem like the most obvious option for Super Bowl grub, but you'll think twice after perusing Yusho's Game Day menu. Available for delivery or pickup, Yusho is offering a special Super Bowl menu of ramen, available in three varieties, fried chicken buckets, snack packs, and Szechaun lamb chili. Go big and meaty for the Super Bowl this year with some carryout from River Roast. For its first Super Bowl, the downtown restaurant is offering a $99 Game Day to-go package, featuring a boatload of football-friendly fare. Dishes include turnips au gratin, pork meatballs with ricotta gnocchi, peas with pearl onions, bacon, and bibb, two whole smoked chickens, and crispy potatoes. For a comfortable dine-in experience, Acre in Andersonville is your answer. All televisions will be attuned to the game, with several food and drink specials kicking off at 3:00 p.m. for the evening. These include $1 oysters, $10 dozen wings, $10 wood-fired pizzas, and $2 Hamm's.
Besides pig skin, if there's one food synonymous with football it's chili. It's burly, beefy, and heady, pretty much everything you need and want in football-watching cuisine. In honor of this football stalwart, Howells & Hood is celebrating the Super Bowl with its second-annual chili cook-off on Super Bowl Sunday, featuring the spicy handiwork of five local chefs tasked with creating chili flights for $16 per person. Guests will get to vote for their favorites during the game. Participating restaurants include eclectic spots like TETE Charcuterie, Oak + Char, DMK Burger Bar, Tanta, and The Radler, along with a chili entry from Howells & Hood of course. The chili flights and voting begin at 3:00 p.m. and run through the game.
Things are getting smoky at Frontier. The obscure animal-focused barstaurant is offering a bunch of smoked meats to-go for Super Bowl Sunday, available for pick up beginning at 10:00 a.m. Options include a whole pig ($550), boar shoulder ($90), smoked pork loin ($65), porchetta ($325), boneless stuffed chicken with crawfish and cornbread stuffing ($35), and sides like five-cheese mac and cheese, potato salad, sweet potato puree, and string beans.
