Put a Sweet Spin on National Sandwich Month
August being the "Dog Days of Summer" AND National Sandwich Month, the stars align to create the perfect excuse to feast your way across the city on ice cream sandwiches. Here are some of Chicago's best.
Unite Urban Grill: When you're craving a classic cookie-based ice cream sandwich like the kind you fawned over from the ice cream truck, Unite Urban Grill has you covered. Sweet nostalgia at its finest, the West Town neighborhood spot sandwiches vanilla ice cream betwixt two chocolate chip cookies. The exterior of the ice cream then gets sprinkled with more crushed chocolate. The best part is you don't even have to chase a musical vehicle in order to get one.
Black Dog Gelato: On the other end of the sandwich spectrum, there's an indulgent behemoth at Black Dog Gelato that is pretty much the opposite of classic nostalgia. Unless you grew up eating doughnut ice cream sandwiches bedecked with bacon. Made by splitting doughnuts across the middle and filling them with various flavors of gelato, the Ukrainian Village mainstay is serving up some of the most sensational summer sweets on a recurring basis. Try the maple-bacon long johns filled with Nutella gelato.
Nonna's: In other non-traditional ice cream sandwich news, some of the prettiest dessert 'wiches in town can now be found at Nonna's. The Italian lunch spot sweetened up their menu for the summer with a gorgeous new dessert option, featuring ice cream sandwiches in offbeat flavors like raspberry swirl ice cream between lemon-basil cookies.
Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams: In terms of ice cream sandwiches, it doesn't get much more precious than the sweet sandwiches at Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams. The Columbus, Ohio-based scoop shop features beautiful and unique flavor combos, most of which are served between huge macarons instead of typical cookies. Examples include the orchid vanilla sandwich with vanilla bean ice cream and black currant jam on purple almond macarons; the chocolate hazelnut with dark chocolate ice cream and roasted hazelnuts on hazelnut macarons; and salty caramel with Jeni's signature salty caramel ice cream served on almond macarons with chopped smoked almonds.
