Chinese New Year Specials in Chicago

The Chinese New Year beckons February 19, christening the Year of the Ram. It's as good an excuse as any to keep the holiday festivities going, especially when restaurants like Mott St and Fat Rice are celebrating in their own special (and delicious) ways.

From Wednesday, February 18, through Saturday, February 21, Mott St is celebrating the Chinese New Year in grandiose style. How grandiose, you ask? 10 courses of classic and contemporary Chinese dishes like crispy shrimp, crunchy crab brain fried rice, steamed dumplings, red miso chicken, and apple cider doughnuts. The spread of food is served family-style, with a four-person party minimum, and costs an astonishingly reasonable $38.88 per person. Beverage pairings are available for an additional $28.88 per person. At meal's end, each diner will be given a red envelope containing a special gift, as is tradition in Chinese culture for New Year's celebrations. Reservations can be made on Mott St's website.

Another stellar option for Chinese New Year's festivities is Fat Rice, the red-hot Logan Square spot renowned for its unique focus on Macanese fare. The restaurant is celebrating the holiday with special dinner and brunch menus February 17 through February 21 for dinner and February 20 through February 22 for brunch. For $88 per person, the festive feast includes boiled pork dumplings with Sichuan chili oil and sweet soy sauce, mussels steamed with Singapore's Tiger Beer, the restaurant's signature Fat Rice dish, and a bucket of Tiger Beer tall boys.
