Brunch Bites: Blunch at Fountainhead and New Menu at West Town Bakery & Diner

In this week's batch of brunch bites, Fountainhead launches Saturday "blunch" and West Town Bakery & Diner implements an entirely new menu.

You know Sunday brunch. It's the best ritual to happen to Sundays since religion. Brunch is relgion. Saturday brunch isn't quite as ubiquitous, but it certainly merits attention. The latest restaurant to give Saturday the brunch treatment is Fountainhead, but chef Cleetus Friedman is taking a decidedly different option, dubbing it blunch to make it seen lunchier. Don't worry though, it's essentially still brunch, just with a slightly uneven portmanteau. The moniker makes sense, considering the hours are more afternoon-y than morning-y, with the menu available from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. Yes you can still get brunchy things such as oatmeal, breakfast burritos, buttermilk biscuits, omelettes, and potato latkes, but a bulk of the menu is devoted to lunch, like the Fountainhead burger, turkey sambal sandwich, Maryland crab cakes, and a harvest grilled cheese made with butterkase, Dante, butternut squash, balsamic onions, and brioche.

West Town Bakery & Diner just overhauled its breakfast and lunch menus to amplify its Americana diner aura. Now everything about the space screams "diner," from the font of the menus to the homey dishes both sweet and savory. The restaurant's breakfast and lunch menus are both offered at all times during operating hours seven days a week, so you can really satiate your brunch craving anytime it hits. Interpretations of diner classics take the stage, including chocolate peanut butter banana pancakes, chicken and waffles, biscuits and gravy, corned beef hash, chilaquiles, and a huevos rancheros Benedict. Dark Matter Coffee is now the chief coffee purveyor, supplying West Town with its own blend, forming the foundation for a toasty beverage menu filled with horchata lattes, spicy mochas, dirty chai lattes, bourbon-spiked coffee, and more. The new menu also offers a number of vegan options, and guests have the unique opportunity to substitute duck eggs for any egg dish.
