Antique Taco Blows Out the Margarita Candle for Their First Birthday

I can't believe it's been one year since I learned of Antique Taco, the restaurant with the atypical antique store-meets-taqueria concept. I'll admit that when I first heard about it, I was confused. So it's all the more impressive that not only was the restaurant able to execute each element with aplomb, but they've managed to create a solid concept unlike anything else in Chicago. I still remember that first moment I bit into an Antique taco, enamored by the invigorating flavors and textures tucked inside the warm tortilla. To me, their tacos have always seemed less like typical tacos and more like composed dishes that happen to be wrapped in tortillas. The crispy fish tempura with sriracha tartar sauce, market mushrooms with smoked onion cream, and pork carnitas with tamarind glaze are all revelatory examples, along with a variety of stellar salads and sides. In light of their first birthday, they're garnishing margaritas with sprinkles and throwing a party this Wednesday, May 15.

To celebrate the occasion, Antique Taco's proprietors Rick and Ashley Ortiz are showcasing work from some of their favorite local artists, reviving a few menu "oldies," and of course, slicing cake. Lost Girls, a local vintage boutique, will be on hand slinging unique wares, Doodlebooth will provide hand-drawn portraits on the spot, and live music will come courtesy of local performer, Jeffrey David. It wouldn't be a birthday without sprinkles, so Antique Taco will be garnishing margaritas with birthday sprinkles and serving cake from Deerfields Bakery.

Along with their regular menu, the restaurant will be bringing back a few favorite oldies and debuting some new ones. I can't wait for the return of the corn off the cob salad, a delicious medley that tastes like upscale elotes. It's a culinary revival on par with a Desinty's Child reunion tour (fingers crossed). For new dishes, Antique Taco will have garlic shrimp tacos and grilled tamales.

The birthday event takes place May 15 from 6:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m.
