The Best Sandwiches at New York Steakhouses

With August being National Sandwich Month, there’s no better time to celebrate the piled-high comfort food in New York City. And there’s no better place to celebrate than at one of the city’s numerous steakhouses. While most people dining at New York City steakhouses focus on the steaks, chops, and lobster tails, these restaurants actually turn out some of the best sandwiches in town. Here are several places and sandwiches you need to try this month.

Gallagher's Steakhouse
Gallagher's Steakhouse

Gallagher’s Steakhouse: Swing by this vintage gem for lunch to hone in on one of Gallagher’s many meaty sandwiches. The star is their namesake prime rib sandwich, which comes heaped with thinly sliced beef, provolone cheese and sauteed onions on a garlicky baguette. Some beef jus is served on the side for dipping, along with a mound of hand-cut fries. Other staple include a stacked turkey club, loaded up with slivers of turkey, smoked bacon, Brie, avocado, lettuce and tomato on cranberry-walnut toast. There’s also an open-faced turkey sandwich, served warm and comforting with gravy and mashed potatoes.

Delmonico’s: Zero in on the more casual menu at Delmonico’s Grill to unearth a myriad of sandwiches at this local institution. In addition to a couple killer burgers, there’s a decadent cheesesteak made with filet mignon onions and pimento cheese, an unexpectedly Southern riff on a Philly tradition. The Delmonico Club is another fixture, here made with house-roasted turkey, Gruyere cheese, avocado, bacon, ham, cheddar and chipotle mayo.

Porter House: Flavors skew more modern at this spiffy steakhouse, where the lunchtime menu contains a variety of bracing creations like chile-rubbed rib-eye steaks, salmon with basil butter and garganelli bolognese. Then there’s the sandwich selection, which focuses on upgraded comfort food. For instance, a rib-eye steak sandwich gets spiced up with pickled jalapeños and red onion jam, while the buttermilk fried chicken sandwich contains vinegar slaw, chili mayo and pickles.

American Cut: Celeb chef Marc Forgione is the man behind the meaty magic at American Cut, which boasts two locations in New York City and another in Atlanta. Eclectic and contemporary, his menus are chock full of surprises, none more playful than his casual bar menu. Here you’ll find his take on mini sandwiches, with the likes of Wagyu sliders glazed with beer cheese and bourbon onions, along with chicken sliders splashed with honey and ranch.

Hunt & Fish Club: As the name suggests, this place is all about the surf & turf, a theme that weaves its way into the sandwich offerings at lunch as well. For instance, there’s a crab sandwich with apple slaw and remoulade, as well as a standout lobster roll with butter. On the meatier side, try the grilled chicken BLT with bacon aïoli or the skirt steak sandwich with cherry peppers and horseradish cream sauce.

Quality Meats: It’s all about the open-faced sandwiches at Quality Meats, where lunch plates offer a modern take on classic flavors. This includes a “lobster roll” presented in deconstructed format with brioche, seasonal greens and fries, along with a steak and mushroom plate with country bread, roasted beets and fries. Or try the sliced filet mignon and horseradish plate, served on country bread with haricots verts and onion rings.
