Brunch Bites: The Promontory and Bistro Campagne

In this week's batch of brunch bites, a Hyde Park newcomer debuts a hearth-inspired brunch program while a Lincoln Square staple updates its weekend menu with new brunch fare.

The Promontory
(The Promontory does brunch)

The eagerly anticipated The Promontory has been bolstering Hyde Park's dining and drinking scene since premiering earlier this year. The hits just keep on coming with the launch of a new weekend brunch program. Like the dinner menu, brunch borrows a hearty page from the hearth-inspired kitchen, cooking up dishes rich with soul, seasonality, and artery-filling delights. This includes an ash-roasted beet and carrot salad, a matsutake mushroom quiche outfitted with Gruyere and Brussels sprouts, peachy French toast with maple-brown butter emulsion, a fried chicken sandwich with zucchini pickles, potato gnocchi lobster hash, and one of the mightiest gems of them all: grilled skirt steak with red flannel hash, red wine-poached egg, and hearth-roasted pepper puree. Save room for doughy delicacies like johnny cakes, apple fritters, and spiced pumpkin doughnuts.

While Hyde Park's slick new herculean haunt wows with modern creations, a Lincoln Square keystone is enriching its brunch menu with decadent dishes befitting cooler weather (woe is me). Bistro Campagne's French countryside-inspired ethos gets an update for fall, thanks to new entries such as pain perdu with nectarine-peach compote and toasted almonds; duck confit and potato hash with sunnyside-up farm eggs and grilled Poilâne toast; crêpes Suzette with caramelized brandied naval oranges and candied pecans; pork belly tartine with roasted tomato jam and garlic aioli; and another tartine enhanced with roasted bell peppers, spinach, shallot marmalade, and whipped Wisconsin goat cheese. To sip, brunch cocktails include grapefruit-splashed mimosas, St-Germain Royals, Kir Royals, and Bistro Bloody Marys with Bordelaise sauce.
