What used to be a fun location has sadly succumbed to anonymous mediocrity. Once, local art adorned the walls. Now, Pork & Mindy's has grown more interested in hawking its signature sauces than integrating into the neighborhood. With a fast-food style, seat-yourself seating layout and oppressive lighting to match, this place now lacks any semblance of personality.
Alas, the menu has declined in tandem with the location itself. The best deal on the menu, the sliders, has been removed entirely. The soda fountain, which once refreshingly served Jones Soda, now pours (if I recall) the standard Coke line. Whatever they've done to the pig candy recipe, once a signature dish, has been a disappointment. The offering remains the same, but has been stripped of its rich flavor and texture. At one point, they even sold *pre-packaged* pig candy as opposed to freshly prepared. They've stopped, but what a slap in the face that was.
Perhaps expansion is to blame for the decline of this Wicker Park eatery; Pork & Mindy's now boasts locations in Wrigley Field and the Loop, with more to come. Perhaps this growth necessitated cost-cutting or efficiency measures be taken at the expense of the menu. And yet, even with the franchise's continued success, the hours at this location remain baffling. Pork & Mindy's is situated near public transit and dozens and dozens of bars yet is only open until 8 pm on weekdays and 9 pm on weekends. The one time I could see myself returning to this charmless husk is when I'm too drunk to care, and yet this restaurant denies me even that.
In any case, while much of the menu remains serviceable, the loss of atmosphere and the watering-down of popular options have rendered this Wicker Park location glaringly inessential.
