Cedars Mediterranean Restaurant - Chicago

Flatbreads, kebabs, steaks and more feature at this Hyde Park mainstay. Cedars was born in the back of a southside grocery store in 1987, introducing much of Chicago to falafel. Cedars' creator, Sudki Abdullah, officially opened its restaurant doors at 53rd & Cornell in November 1992.

On a very cold, early January morning in 2019, Sudki suddenly passed away. Though very sad, he did transition doing what he loves most: preparing food to serve guests that day. In its 27 years of service, Cedars quietly became a legendary Hyde Park institution.

To help keep his spirit present, Sudki's family decided to keep Cedars alive -- AND make it thrive! Sudki's son Amer took over as owner and quickly realized - in his words - "this ain't my daddy's kitchen anymore!"

Amer teamed up with world-class Chef Amado Lopez. With Chef Amado's hard-earned experience - first as a Charlie Trotter protege, then as Rick Bayless's sous chef - Amer gave Chef Amado latitude with the menu. Using the mantra "Mideast meets Midwest," Chef Amado took many risks and curated a special menu that he and Amer pray would make Sudki proud - and diners smile!
