Amaru - Chicago

Pan-Latin cuisine is the agenda over at Amaru, an intimate Wicker Park eatery owned by a husband-and-wife team. The menu is brimming with dishes and drinks inspired by countries and islands throughout the region.

Brunch, offered Saturday and Sunday, is especially popular at Amaru. Guests will find Latin American as well as American dishes with Latin accents on the menu. Of note are offerings like chicken and waffle, in which the waffle is made of yuca and paired with buttermilk Creole fried chicken. It's one of the restaurant's top sellers. There are also dishes like chorizo fried eggs, piononos (bacon-wrapped plantains), and steak and eggs topped with poblano sriracha.

On the dinner menu, there's a branzino with brown butter mojo; pulpo, or charred octopus, with poblano sriracha; and pollo el carbon, or three-day marinated Amish chicken, Peruvian corn cucumber salad and salsa huancaina.

Cocktails play upon the classics with a Latin American edge. Of note is the Kingston Negroni. It's made with Jamaican rum, pomegranate liqueur and Carpano Antica sweet vermouth.
