Several Chicagoland brews came home with medals from the recent Great American Beer Festival, the largest commercial beer competition in the world. Two half-pound beef patties, layered with cheddar, Jack, mozzarella and Swiss cheeses, piled with strips of bacon and onion straws and dressed with barbecue sauce, lettuce and red onion, then served with french fries and onion rings. In this farm-fresh twist on “Iron Chef,” the competing chefs will have 30 minutes to gather fresh ingredients from the farmers’ market, plus another 30 minutes to cook up a dish with their selected produce. Create a recipe from Dawali’s ingredients and you could win $100 in meals and a hotel stay. Wicker Park’s Smoke Daddy invites you to name its new smoker, a massive Southern Yankee smoker trailer. Jack Sprat would eat nothing flat. Forty-three budding Chicago chefs cooked their way to $534,308 in culinary scholarships, cash, and merchandise awards during the Careers through Culinary Arts Program Chicago Cooking Competition held at the Illinois Institute of Arts-Chicago on Saturday, April 24.
