Light Opera Works offers a delicious revival of >Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein’s poignant 1945 musical, “Carousel” through Aug. 28. In this farm-fresh twist on “Iron Chef,” the competing chefs will have 30 minutes to gather fresh ingredients from the farmers’ market, plus another 30 minutes to cook up a dish with their selected produce. On July 14, 1789, revolutionary troops stormed the Bastille, a medieval fortress and prison in Paris, bringing down harsh rule of France’s Bourbon monarchy. The first Fete de la Federation, on July 14, 1790, celebrated the establishment of a constitutional monarchy in France. France — and Francophiles — have been toasting the day ever since. Here are a few events around Chicago. Tickets have nearly sold out for the Monday, July 19, Joan Baez concert at Metropolis Performing Arts Centre in downtown Arlington Heights. It’s a timewarp! Excalibur in River North begins monthly midnight screenings of “The Rocky Horror Picture Show,” that 1975 musical classic, on Friday, June 25. “Sugar” ran for 505 performances on Broadway in 1972 and garnered four Tony nominations. Drury Lane in Oakbrook Terrace is currently giving it a vibrant revival with lots of local color. Party like it’s 1959, Chicago tiki fans. “Retro Zombie Tiki Terror,” a night of zombie fun, Sunday, May 30, at The Tiki Terrace in Des Plaines, features live entertainment, zombie movies, raffles, prizes, tiki tunes and, naturally, zombie cocktails. Much in the same spirit as Charles Ludlam’s gothic spoof “The Mystery of Irma Vep,” this madcap pastiche by Patrick Barlow, based on a concept from Simon Corble and Nobby Dimon, features four actors who reenact all the roles in Alfred Hitchcock’s classic 1935 film. |
