Quartet of Mexican cuisine’s top chefs to gather in Chicago

Mexico City chef Jorge Vallejo (Quintonil) and New York City’s Alex Stupak (Empellon) join Chicagoans Carlos Gaytan (Mexique) and Rick Bayless (Frontera Grill and others) for a two-day celebration of contemporary Mexican cuisine, “Mod Mex,” Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 15 and 16, at Frontera Grill in River North.

Saturday’s event, “Mod Mex: The New Face of Mexican Food,” starts with breakfast and morning mezcal cocktails followed by a program featuring each chef discussing and demonstrating his Nuevo Latino cuisine, interactive presentations on wines from Baja and mezcal and a walk-around tasting featuring the cuisine of each chef, along with beverages.

On Sunday, the four acclaimed chefs will collaborate on “Mod Mex: The Meal,” a five-course contemporary Mexican dinner, paired with wine and spirits.

Tickets for the Saturday event, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., are $75, and the 6 p.m. Sunday dinner costs $175. Proceeds support scholarships for Chicago Public School students studying culinary arts at Kendall College via event co-sponsors the Illinois Restaurant Association Educational Foundation and the Kendall College Charitable Trust, which funds a full-tuition Frontera scholarship for Mexican-American students.
