10 Chicago New Year’s Day brunches

Stoke up after tonight’s excesses with a hearty brunch and a little hair of the dog that bit you. (Where does that phrase come from, anyway? Woof.)

  1. Zest Bistro at Lemon Tree Grocer in Downers Grove will be open to serve Chef Tim Canning’s brunch dishes including breakfast sandwich with scrambled eggs, Niman Ranch bacon, cheddar cheese and arugula on a toasted pretzel bun; duck-confit hash with a fried egg, shaved manchego, kumquat jam, toasted baguette and sriracha butter; eggs benedict and omelets. Mix your own bloody ‘Merry’ at the bar or try some Prosecco cocktails.

  2. Bistronomic on the Near North Side features Chef Martial Noguier’s brunch entrees, served along with a mimosa, for a special price of $20.13.

  3. Smith & Wollensky in River North serves brunch till 4 p.m. with dishes such as pastrami salmon benedict with sliced house-cured salmon with poached eggs and dijon hollandaise on marble rye toast. and drinks like gazpacho bloody marys and blood orange mimosas.

  4. Angel Food Bakery in Uptown invites you to stay in your pajamas for brunch tomorrow .Wear your pjs, and get house-made doughnuts free. Drinks including mimosas, bloody marys and screwdrivers available too, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

  5. Ina’s in the West Loop will be open from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. serving hangover helpers such as chicken and waffles and brisket hash with poached eggs, plus blood-orange mimosas.

  6. Vincent in Andersonville will be open 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. with items like the pork belly sandwich with tomato bacon jam, manchego cheese, red onion, spicy aioli and fried eggs plus “hair of the dog” drinks including the Pink Elephant, sweet sparkling moscato and fresh squeezed grapefruit juice.

  7. Slurping Turtle in River North will be handing out free cinnamon brioche donut holes to pajama-clad brunch patrons from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. PJ wearers also get gift certificates for their next visit.

  8. Timothy O’Toole’s in Streeterville will be screening the Northwestern University Wildcats game against Mississippi State in the Taxslayer.com Gator Bowl on New Year’s Day. Brunch, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., features a bottomless bloody mary and mimosa bar and dishes such as Mario’s breakfast panini with fried egg, ham, American cheese, mayo and jalapenos on toasted pressed bread; a maple bacon breakfast burger with a half-pound certified Angus beef patty, bacon, cheddar, fried egg and maple-bacon aioli and a griddled Monte Cristo sandwich.

  9. Frasca Pizzeria and Wine Bar in Lakeview offers breakfast pizza topped with over easy eggs, bacon and cheese, and prosciutto or hollandaise sauce, along with bottomless mimosas and Smokin’ marys, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

  10. Dunlays on Clark in Lincoln Park and Dunlays on the Square in Logan Square serve up the Dunz Omelette, with mozzarella, provolone, Italian sausage, bacon and caramelized onions, and each location has its own signature French toast, served 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
