Have some Swedish Christmas in Chicagoland

  • The Swedish restaurants at Ikea host their annual Julbord Celebration Friday, Dec. 7, at both the Schaumburg and Bolingbrook locations. The event offers an all-you-can-eat Smorgasbord of Swedish holiday ham, smoked and poached salmon, Swedish style meatballs with lingonberries, assorted cheeses, crisp bread, gravid lax with mustard, assorted desserts and more. Live music accompanies.

    Seatings are at 4 and 6:30 p.m. in Schaumburg, 4:30 and 6:30 p.m. in Bolingbrook. Tickets are $9.99 for adult members of Ikea’s free Family program and $2.49 for their kids or $12.99 and $4.99 for the general public. A cash bar also features. Julbord ticket purchasers receive a coupon for $10 off their Ikea purchase of $100 or more. Go to the store to buy tickets in advance.

  • Andersonville’s Swedish American Museum hosts Julmiddag, traditional Swedish Christmas family dinner at 5 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 16, featuring an elaborate Smorgasbord catered by Tre Kronor. Tomten (the Swedish version of Santa Claus) will give julklappar (presents) to all the children. The evening includes a Lucia procession, and dancing around the Christmas tree. Tickets are $65 for adults, $15 children.

  • The Ann Sather restaurants will be serving complete holiday meals on Christmas Day. The repast includes a choice of roast turkey with celery-sage stuffing, mashed potatoes and cranberry sauce; baked bone-in ham with fruit glaze and sweet potatoes; prime rib au jus with mashed potatoes; broiled salmon with mustard dill sauce and mashed potatoes; or “The Swedish Sampler” (roasted duck breast with lingonberry glaze, meatball, potato sausage, spaetzle, sauerkraut and brown beans). Alongside come homemade breads, vegetable soup, seasonal vegetables and pie: apple, walnut-chocolate chip or pumpkin.

    The meal costs $19.95 ($10.95 for children 12 years and under). Reservations will be accepted for parties of six or more. In Lakeview, dinner will be served 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Christmas as well as Christmas Eve, The Andersonville location will serve till 6 p.m. on Christmas Day.
