The first 400 kids will get free pumpkins at Lake Geneva's Oktoberfest.

Take a ride up to Lake Geneva this weekend for gorgeous views of fall color. The lakefront tree displays, designed by top landscape architects such as Jens Jensen the designer of Chicago’s Columbus Park and other Chicago parks, offer glorious bursts of brilliant yellow, mellow orange and fiery reds. They’re expected to be at their peak this weekend, during Lake Geneva’s 21st annual Oktoberfest, Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 6 and 7, in downtown Lake Geneva.

Area restaurants and food vendors will be serving bratwurst, potato pancakes, pulled pork turkey legs, and other festival fare, and most downtown restaurants will offer seasonal Oktoberfest specials. The fest, one of the last big outdoor events of the season, also features music, street dance, magic shows, craft booths, wagon and pony rides, a bouncy castle, and more.

More than 400 pumpkins will be given away at 1 p.m. on the 200 block of Broad Street downtown Lake Geneva. An annual tradition, the Great Pumpkin Giveaway passes out free future jack o’lanterns to the first 400 children aged 10 and under.

Admission to the event is free.
