Eat sweet for a good cause

Sweet! Uncommon Ground, Fig Catering, Hoosier Mama Pie Company, Browntrout, Katherine Anne Confections, Swim Cafe, Metropolis Coffee and other local chocolatiers and bakeries will come together Wednesday, March 28, for “Desserts for Deserts,” a fundraiser aimed at tackling the problem of food deserts — low-income neighborhoods where fresh foods are unavailable or unaffordable.

Satisfy your sweet tooth while helping to raise awareness about this problem, which plagues many Chicago communities. The event, sponsored by Fed Up!, starts at 7 p.m. with a VIP reception, followed by general admission from 8 to 10 p.m., and takes place at Greenhouse Loft, 2545 W. Diversey, Chicago. Tickets start at $55.

Proceeds benefit Fresh Moves, a nonprofit organization that aims to eliminate food deserts in Chicago. Its projects include transforming a donated CTA bus into a mobile produce market that sells fruits and vegetables four times a week in North Lawndale and Austin.
