Along with its hand-cut, double-fried french fries and other fried specialties — country-fried bacon, country-fried gyros, deep-fried pickle chips and deep-fried jalapeno chips — Evanston’s Wiener and Still Champion now adds crusty deep-fried gravy to its repertoire. On the “secret menu” of by-request items, the gravy comes in a patty, ready to top off the North Shore restaurant’s 1/3-pound burgers, and ooze out at first bite.
“We’ll add a patty of Deep Fried Gravy on any of our burgers, for a little extra charge of $1.50. I don’t know that you can get Deep Fried gravy anywhere else, so that small upcharge doesn’t seem too much, says owner Gus Paschalis. “And, it’s really good gravy.”
