Soup’s on in Bucktown

Soup & Bread” starts up for a new year Jan. 4, serving six soups to a soundtrack by DJ Treetop Lover. The free weekly chowder fest runs from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesdays through mid-April at the Hideout in Bucktown. Copies of the “Soup and Bread Cookbook: Building Community One Pot at a Timewill also be on sale.

The event serves half a dozen or so soups made by professional and amateur cooks each week, as well as bread donated from local bakeries.

Organizer Martha Bayne is now recruiting soup cooks and other volunteers for the 2012 schedule. Email her at for details and to sign up your soupy specialty.

The family-friendly soup feasts are free, but collect donations for local food pantries and hunger-relief organizations, such as the Casa Catalina Basic Human Needs Center in Back of the Yards. Last year, the effort raised more than $10,000.

“Soup & Bread” will also teach a cooking class Jan. 21 at Gallery 37 Center for the Arts in the Loop.
