It’s tomato time!

TomatoFest

Show off your heirloom tomato harvest at the Chicago TomatoFest Potluck, 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 24, at the Chicago Honey Co-Op in North Lawndale. Attendees are invited to bring their homegrown tomatoes, a potluck dish for sharing, and chairs or picnic blankets.

The tomato do benefits the preSERVE garden, a partnership between Slow Food Chicago, the Chicago Honey Co-Op, the North Lawndale Greening Committee and NeighborSpace.

Early arrivals (4 p.m.) can help harvest black-eyed and crowder peas from the preSERVE garden. Tours will be given of the garden and the Chicago Honey Co-op, an urban apiary dedicated to beekeeping training and sustainable agricultural practices. To keep the bees happy, wear light-colored clothing and a hat, but no perfumes, colognes, or scents.

The event offers wine from organic grapes donated by Candid Wines and beer and soft drinks donated by Goose Island Beer.

Tickets are $15 plus a side dish or dessert.
