Hot news! Chicago’s wiener officially the biggest

The Big Hot Dog.

“Hey! Look at me! And look at my enormous wiener!” says The Big Hot Dog creator Dan Abbate.

The Big Hot Dog, produced by Gorilla Tango Novelty Meats, a sideline for the folks behind Chicago’s Gorilla Tango Theatre, has been named the world’s largest commercially available hot dog by the Guinness Book of World Records. Gorilla Tango introduced the 16-inch-long, 4-inch-diameter, 7-pound wienie in January 2010.

“I always knew I had something special with my wiener, but this just confirms it,” says creator Dan Abbate. “Now, I cannot say I set out to have the biggest one in the world, but there is a special sense of accomplishment and pride in it being recognized. It says, ‘Hey! Look at me! And look at my enormous wiener!’ And really, that just makes me all warm and fuzzy inside.”

No ordinary Chicago-style dog, this frankenfurter is made of 100-percent veal, beef and pork and sells for $89.95 plus shipping by mail order only. It’s made for Gorilla Tango by sausage makers at Schmeisser’s Home Made Sausage of Niles.

The massive hot dog is meant to be cooked and eaten by being sliced into patties and served on hamburger buns. One Big Hot Dog is about 40 servings.

Impetus for the product, its producers say, came from Abbate’s father, Denny Abbate, who couldn’t keep ordinary hot dogs from rolling off his grill and landing on the ground, “It pissed me off to have to bend down and wipe the damn things off,” he said.
