May is National Barbecue Month, National Burger Month and more, according to the people who promote such things, so bring on the beef! Here’s what a few Chicago restaurants are doing to celebrate meat in May.

  1. Steak Week, Harry Caray’s Italian Steakhouse, Lombard, River North and Rosemont, Monday through Thursday, May 16 through 19.

Dry- or wet-aged? Corn- or grass-fed? Bison or beef? Prime or Wagyu? Every night during Steak Week at Harry Caray’s, where the menu boasts one of Chicagoland’s most diverse beef selections, Chef Paul Katz will offer four side-by-side steak comparisons ($32.95–$39.95), served with detailed tasting notes comparing the two different steaks. Sommelier Mark Molitor’s also suggests wine pairing ($11–$20 per glass) with notes explaining how the qualities of the meat influenced the choice of wine. Reservations suggested.

  2. National Barbecue Month Tastings, Q-BBQ, LaGrange, Tuesdays throughout May, and National Brisket Day Celebration, Saturday, May 28.

Every Tuesday throughout May, Q-BBQ will offer free tastings of its barbecue platter items. On May 28, the restaurant will feature a tasting platter of sliced brisket, chopped brisket, burnt ends with brisket, “mac-Q-roni,” two Q-pups and choice of one side for $14.95.

  3. Burger Month Specials, Timothy O’Toole’s, Streeterville, throughout May.

Chef Corey Grupe’s Burger Month menu includes a prime Angus burger topped with two Chicago-style hot dogs. Tackle the $19.95 “Big Timmy,” two half-pound burger patties, four kinds of cheese, bacon, onion straws, BBQ sauce, lettuce and red onion, plus fries and onion rings, and you’ll win a T-shirt.

  4. Burger Month Specials, Franklin Tap, Loop, throughout May.

Chef Tim Dowling’s weekly changing National Burger Month menu will offer grass-fed bison, spam, lamb, and creatively topped beef burgers.

  5. Burger Month Specials, Mity Nice, Magnificent Mile, throughout May.

  6. Chef Larry Donahue offers seven different half-pound prime burgers, a different choice daily, to celebrate May’s National Burger Month. Among them is Sunday’s “Hangover Burger,” with American cheese, grilled onions, pickles and chipotle mayo between two bacon grilled cheese sandwiches.
