19 Chicago places to celebrate National Soup Month

 

January is National Soup Month, and these Chicago restaurants are celebrating with souper specials. You can stop in for or bowlful … or you can wear soup on your head.

  1. 33 Club, Old Town, $5 soup special, with choices such as roasted tomato served with petite grilled cheese sandwich.

  2. Carlucci, Downers Grove, choice of one of five daily soups, served with house-made breads, $5.

  3. Carnivale, River West, seasonal daily soup, $7.

  4. Chicago Cut Steakhouse, River North, daily soup, split pea or French onion au gratin, $4–$7.

  5. Dawali Mediterranean Kitchen, Albany Park, lentil soup, $2, or soup of the day, $2.75.

  6. Foodlife, Magnificent Mile, any cup of soup 99 cents with an entree.

  7. Gibsons Bar & Steakhouse, Oak Brook, free cup of soup with all entrees (a la carte $3.25–$5.50 per cup, $5–$8 per bowl). Rotating selections include chicken noodle, split pea, cream of mushroom, beef barley, shrimp bisque, lobster bisque and seafood gumbo.

  8. Grotto Italian Steakhouse, Oak Brook, soup of the day or minestrone, $4–$6.

  9. The Hideout, Bucktown, “Soup & Bread,” 5:30–7:30 p.m. Wednesdays, a weekly benefit for local charities with soups made by volunteer cooks. Tomorrow’s season opening also includes pie from Hoosier Mama Pie Co. and music from DJ Mary Nisi. Pay-what-you-can donations benefit different organizations weekly, beginning with Casa Catalina Basic Human Needs Center at Holy Cross/Immaculate Heart of Mary parish in Back of the Yards.

  10. Il Poggiolo, Hinsdale, soup of the day will include butternut squash, poblano with roasted corn, lentil and potato leek, $4–$6.

  11. ItaliAsia Restaurant, River North, unlimited soup-and-salad weekday lunch buffet, offers two daily house-made soups such as Italian wedding, minestrone, Tuscan tomato basil, tortilla soup, cream of broccoli, cream of asparagus and chicken and rice, $10, including soft drink, coffee or tea.

  12. Koi, Evanston, and Chens, Wrigleyville, seafood tofu chowder, $4.95.

  13. The Lucky Monk, South Barrington, daily soups such as chicken tortilla, baked potato soup, minestrone and chicken noodle, $3.95–$5.95.

  14. Mon Ami Gabi, Lincoln Park, and Oak Brook, mini trio of onion soup au gratin with bubbling gruyere cheese, roasted sweet potato soup with toasted orange meringue and weekly changing root-vegetable soup.

  15. Nabuki, Hinsdale, miso or hot-and-sour soup, $4.

  16. R.J. Grunts, Lincoln Park, “Temperature Soup” — a cup of soup such as chicken noodle or butternut squash, with the purchase of an entree, costs the same number of cents as degrees of outdoor temperature at Lake Michigan at 11 a.m. that day.

  17. Seasons 52, Schaumburg, global soup selection — chicken curry aka mulligatawny (Asia), chicken tortilla (Latin America), cioppino (Mediterranean/San Francisco) and chicken noodle (American), $5.25.

  18. Shokran Moroccan Restaurant, Irving Park, Moroccan harira, a tomato based vegetarian soup with ginger, lentils, chick peas, rice and cilantro, $1.

  19. Tavern on Rush, Gold Coast, daily soup such as minestrone, baked French onion, New England clam chowder, white bean with ham and pasta, chicken tortilla and tomato bisque, $4.95.
