SOUL FOOD QUEEN PASSES. Condolences to the family and friends of Edna Stewart, founder and head chef of West Side soul food spot Edna’s Restaurant, who passed away Friday at the age of 72, the Sun-Times reports. The East Garfield Park eatery has been a center for politicians, fried chicken and flaky biscuits since 1966. Its future is apparently still up in the air….

DEAN DIES.
The Associated Press reports the passing of sausage king and country singer Jimmy Dean yesterday. Dean, who sold his namesake sausage company to Downers Grove-based Sara Lee Corp. in 1984, was 81….

SUPER SAUSAGE. The makers of the Big Hot Dog have introduced the Big Bratwurst, which measures 16 inches long and 4 inches in diameter, weighs 7 pounds and offers 50 servings ($39.95)….

MENDEZ MOVES ON. Chef Mark Mendez of Carnivale in River West blogged last week that after six years at the helm, he’ll be leaving the Jerry Kleiner Latin American restaurant in August to open a place of his own. The eatery announced that David Dworshak, who has been executive sous chef at Carnivale since its inception, will be moving up to the top toque….

HOTEL SWEETS.
Dessert diva Stephanie Prida, late of Blackbird in the West Loop and winner of the Jean Banchet Award for Best Rising Pastry Chef, has been named executive pastry chef for the Elysian hotel on the Gold Coast, including Balsan and Ria.
