Eat for James Beard, Charles the Great Dane

If you haven’t been able to make it to the James Beard House in New York, you can get a taste of the action there with the upcoming Celebrity Chef Tour, a dinner benefiting the Beard Foundation at 6:30 p.m Thursday, May 20, at the Metropolitan Club, 233 S. Wacker Drive in the Loop.

Participating chefs Greg Carso of the Metropolitan Club, Radhika Desai of English in River North, Alain Roby of the Hyatt Regency Chicago in the Loop and Marcus Samuelsson of C-House in Streeterville.

Tickets to the six-course dinner are $150, $130 with a Visa Signature card.

Another group of chefs will come together at 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 18, at Theatre Cafe in Irving Park for a dinner to raise funds for Charles, a Great Dane belonging to Chef Amalia Obermeier-Smith of Kuma’s Corner in Logan Square and her partner, Tiffany Chandanais. The 5-month-old pup needs a $4,000 operation to correct bilateral premature closure of the distal ulnar and prevent him from becoming painfully crippled. Other fundraisers for Charles include a dog wash from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, May 15, at 6460 N. Milwaukee Ave., Chicago.

UPDATE: The May 18 Charles the Great Dane fundraiser will be a six-course dinner with wine pairings, offered in two seatings, 6 and 8 p.m. Tickets are $50, including pre-dinner amuse bouche and cocktails; RSVP via Paypal address indicating your preferred seating.The menu includes oyster shooters; seared ahi tuna crusted in soy and wasabi sesame seeds, served on a crispy wonton salad with ponzu sauce; braised and fried pork belly with crunchy apple, sweet potato mash and apple cider caramel; beet salad Napoleon; truffle tagliatelli; chipotle lime-marinated skirt steak with smoked gouda polenta cake; and dessert.
