HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MANNY’S! On this day in 1942, Jack Raskin opened what was to become Chicago’s foremost delicatessen, Manny’s Coffee Shop & Deli in the South Loop. Going stronger than ever, Manny’s is now run by Jack’s grandson Ken and great-grandsons Danny and Matt Raskin.

PUBURBAN NEWS. Bob McCullough’s Pub & Billiards has opened in Schaumburg with two rows of tournament-quality tables, dart boards, 14 televisions and a long wooden bar serving cheap Miller Light drafts. There’s a menu of burgers, sandwiches, soups, salads, and other American favorites. Breakfast is served all day until the late-night closing, and during the last hour before closing, it’s free.

SHALOM, HASHALOM. Fans of HaShalom, the 28-year-old West Rogers Park Israeli/Moroccan standby, are hoping the announced March 28 closing will be another false alarm, but it looks as if owners Dani and Jacques Zrihen are retiring for good this time.

CHICAGO RESTAURANT WEEK BEGINS. The third annual Chicago Restaurant Week starts today. Through Feb. 28, over 150 Chicago restaurants, from Ai to Zest, will offer three-course set meals for $22 at lunch and $32 at dinner. Reservations are recommended and wise diners check out the menus in advance.

NO SONG AND DANCE FOR TIBET. The Tibetan Alliance of Chicago’s Feb. 20 Losar celebration, listed in our Lunar New Year’s events calendar, has been cancelled. Because the Tibetan Government in Exile, Dharamsala, is urging every Tibetan organization not to celebrate Losar this year in light of the situation in Tibet, the Chicago group will instead host “Friends and Supporters of Tibetan Alliance Appreciation Night,” with a video screening of “Educating the Heart” talk given by His Holiness the Dalai Lama at Madison, Wisc., in May 2008. The replacement event takes place at 6 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 20, at 2422 Dempster St., Evanston.

BAD EGGS. In a disappointing development in Easter candy, Necco’s formerly “Real Chocolate Marshmallow Eggs” are now “Chocolatey Marshmallow Eggs.”

Necco also changed its classic Valentine’s Day Sweethearts conversation hearts formula this year, and in 2008 discontinued the Wisconsin favorite Stark Candy Raisins.
