Think you can cook as well as the top TV chefs? Here’s your chance to be one.

If you’re a skilled home cook with no formal training, a new culinary reality show, “MasterChef,” is looking for you. Based on a BBC series, the cooking contest show, hosted by British chef Gordon Ramsay, star of “Hell’s Kitchen” and “Kitchen Nightmares,” will pit home cooks against each other as they vie to create “the perfect dish” and win the “MasterChef” title. An Australian version has been a huge hit.

It’s “American Idol” crossed with “Top Chef.”

“This is a huge, nationwide search for the best amateur chef in America,” says Howard T. Owens of Reveille, the executive producer. “It’s about people who are lawyers, construction workers and stay-at-home moms but whose real passion is to make great food. This is their shot to prove they have what it takes.”

To book an audition: E-mail your name, age, occupation, current photo, contact number and a brief description of your cooking experience and style to Put your city and state in the subject line.

Chicago-area auditions will take place 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Jan. 24 at Sur la Table in Naperville. You’ll need to bring a prepared dish that can be served at room temperature. For more details, see the Web site or e-mail
