It’s “Top Chef” aloha-style, and you are there.
On Monday, Sept. 14, three Chicago culinary students from The Illinois Institute of Art in the Loop and the Cooking & Hospitality Institute of Chicago in River North — Benjamin Brunner, Justin Selk and Nathan Haave — pair off with experienced local restaurant chefs in a culinary contest to win a coveted internship at Roy’s in River North.
Each team will prepare a dish in Roy’s signature Hawaiian fusion style. The mentor chefs are Tim Graham of Tru in Streeterville, Jackie Shen of Red Light in the West Loop and Pete Rikes of Capital Grille in Streeterville. Official judges include local media personalities and Chef Art Smith of Table Fifty-two on the Gold Coast, but diners can judge for themselves during dinner at the event.
Besides the student-prepped dishes, the five-course “Aloha Kitchen Challenge” dinner will include a course created by Roy’s Chicago Chef Partner Kevin Dusinski and Chef Roy Yamaguchi himself, who’ll be jetting in from Hawaii for the event. The contest begins at 6 p.m. at Roy’s, and dinner costs $65 per person, including wine pairings. Reservations are required.
