Wilco’s Oct. 18 hometown show at UIC Pavilion is already sold out, and tickets for the 19th are going fast, but at press time there were seats left for front man Jeff Tweedy’s solo performance at 8 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 8, in Edgewater. A benefit for Emanuel Congregation, the concert takes place at the temple.

Comedian Peter Grosz, a Second City alum, will open for Tweedy. Grosz, now in New York, is a writer for Comedy Central’s “Colbert Report.

This is not your everyday sort of temple fundraiser, though Tweedy has performed on behalf of Emanuel before. In case you’re wondering why a rock star is doing a benefit for a shul, you can read about Tweedy’s son Spencer’s bar mitzvah there. And Grosz was a member when he lived in Chicago, too.

Tickets, general admission by sections, range from $54 to $200 for VIP amenities.

Edgewater offers many dining choices. A good bet near the synagogue is Broadway Cellars, a pleasant American bistro and wine bar.

  • The synagogue’s parking lot offers one of the most stunning parking lot views of the lake and the city. While in the neighborhood be sure to catch a cup of the city’s best coffee from local roaster and coffee shop Metropolis on Granville between Kenmore and Winthrop. Plenty of Thai choices including Summer on Granville and Indie on Broadway just north of Thorndale. And at the corner of Glenwood and Devon is uncommon ground. These selections simply augment Broadway Cellars and stand as a backdrop to the evening’s entertainment.
