Hot Dog Cookoff For Charity

Hot dogs are even more delicious when they're cooked for a good cause. The all-American staple takes the spotlight on August 1 for the third annual Hot Dog Cookoff for charity, hosted by Gapers Block and Reach Out and Read (ROR) at Schubas in Lakeview. Taking place from noon until 5:00 p.m., the summertime shindig features novel takes on classic Vienna Beef hot dogs by chefs from Schubas' Harmony Grill, Wiener and Still Champaion, Monti's, ThePizzle.net and ManBQue. Entries will be judged by a panel of hot dog aficionados, including Dining Chicago's very own "The Food Dude"  David Lissner, hot dog historian Bruce Kraig, chef Alan Lake, Doug Sohn of Hot Doug's fame, and Lisa White from Chicagoist. Attendees will also get to vote for the People's Choice Award. Admission is $20 for adults and $10 for children younger than 12, which includes tasting portions of all hot dogs. There will also be a cash bar, prizes, cornhole, and a DJ. Tickets are available here or at the door. Proceeds from the event benefit ROR of Illinois, a non-profit that strives to incorporate early literacy into primary pediatric care.

Old Irving Park Beer & BBQ Challenge

Another all-American pastime takes the stage this weekend in Old Irving Park, in the form of the second annual Old Irving Park Beer & BBQ Challenge. Running from 1:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. in the St. Viator School & Parish Parking Lot (3644 N. Kedvale Ave.), the boozy bash pits 15 pit masters against one another for BBQ glory, each contender teamed with a local craft brewer. Together, they'll work to cook up unique BBQ pork and beer pairings for guests to sample and vote on. There will also be local celebrity chef judges at this year's fete, including Stephanie Izard of Girl & the Goat, Barry Sorkin of Smoque BBQ, and Joaquin Soler of smalls. Teams include 4BoysBBQ with Paul Koslowski and Sean Mahoney joined by Ike Orcutt of BuckleDown Brewing; HazyQ with Brian Hayes and Jared Rouben of Moody Tongue Brewing; Inglorious Basters with John Arena and Matt Gallagher from Half Acre Beer Company; Pigcile BBQ with Ken Leja and Brant Dubovick of DryHop Brewers; Porknado with Mike Sanders and Clint Bautz of Lake Effect Brewing Company; and lots more. Tickets for the event are $50, available here, with proceeds benefitting St. Viator. VIP tickets are $75 in advance and $80 at the door, which grants early entry at noon.

ALS Fundraiser at Dove's Luncheonette

In other charitable news, Dove's Luncheonette kicks off a month-long campaign this weekend to support the ALS Therapy Development Institute. For the month of August, the Wicker Park haunt will donate a dollar for every Cantarito cocktail sold to the foundation, the world's first and largest non-profit biotech focused entirely on ALS research. The campaign was inspired by Oak Park's Sarah Coglianese and her battle with ALS. The Cantarito is a drink made with Lunazul Blanco, orange and grapefruit juice, salt, and Mexican Squirt.
